million in research fundinv through federal stimulus grant The funding, announced by members of the Westerh New York congressional delegation, is from the comews through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Grantes include: • $356,346 for a Roswell researcbh project on overcoming therapy resistance forlymphoma patients; • $145,399 for a Roswell studg that looks at race and patternsd of how parents navigate the healthh care community after a child is diagnosefd with cancer; • $335,208 for Roswell researcherzs to study of biomarkers in cance r prognosis, progression and metastasis; • $297,488 for a Roswel study on allergic airway inflammation and drug • $191,544 for a study at UB that testa whether patient race or gender affect immunosuppression drug responsees in kidney transplant recipients; $20,478 to UB for studengt and/or teacher summer research at NIH fundexd labs.
Candace Johnson, Roswell’s deputy directo r and senior vice president for translational says the institution is especiallg excited that many of these grantzs were previously submitted and just misseddthe cut-off, due in part to stagnang federal funding to the NIH Without the additional stimulus these researchers would likely not have been “The regular grants are still being fundecd from the regular pot of funding, but thesee are additional awards. It’sd fantastic,” she says. “Everyone is so hopeful. Hopefullyu we can get science backon track.
” Johnson expectas to hear about additional grant awardx that have been provisionally approved; as well as grant requests have been submitted in the past several weeks specifically for the stimuluz funds. The Recovery Act included $10.4 billiob for the National Institutesof Health, including $8.2 billiom for scientific research priorities. In April, the two organizations receive acombined $2.2 million in stimulu grants for research and technologyh initiatives.
